IROC XXII - 1998

iROC

The International Race of Champions was an auto racing competition, featuring identically-prepared stock cars set up by a single team of mechanics, in an effort to make the race purely a test of driver ability. It was run with a small field of invited drivers (6-12) from all the major racing series including NASCAR, SCCA, FIA and USAC. Over the years CART and the IRL drivers, among others also participated.

IROC XXII - 1998

Jeff Gordon opened the season with his first-ever IROC victory at Daytona, which was the serie's first rain-shortened event. Gordon made to the winner's circle after 75 of the scheduled 100 miles. In Race 2 at the California Speedway, Mark Martin passed Gordon for the lead and stayed there for the last 38 laps to claim the win. Series newcomer Jeff Burton won in Michigan after Tommy Kendall led the opening 44 laps. In IROC's historic debut at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Jimmy Vasser was on the pole and led the first 36 laps, but Martin came from 11th to pass with four laps to go to take the triumph and his third consecutive IROC crown. The average margin of victory for the four events was an amazing .195 of a second. (from IROC Website)
