NTT IndyCar Series
The NTT IndyCar Series is an open wheeled racing series in the United States and Canada. For 1996-1997, the series was simply referred to as the USAC Indy Racing League,. For 1998-1999, the series had its first title sponsor, and was advertised as the Pep Boys Indy Racing League. The contract was not renewed after the second year. In 2000, the series was to be sponsored by Internet search engine Northern Light for five seasons, and the series was named the Indy Racing Northern Light Series. After only two seasons, however, the sponsorship agreement ended when Northern Light pulled its sponsorship. The league reverted back to the Indy Racing League name for the 2002 season, with no title sponsor. The IndyCar Series name was officially adopted beginning in 2003, as the series was now legally entitled to use it. IZOD was announced as the series title sponsor beginning on November 5, 2009. In 2013, IZOD announced that they would no longer be sponsoring the series with Verizon taking over sponsorship in 2014. In January 2019, it was announced that Japanese communications company NTT would take over the sponsorship of the series. The series is now called the NTT IndyCar Series. |

The Indy Racing League (IRL) under the name of INDYCAR, is the governing body for the NTT IndyCar Series and developmental series, the Firestone Indy Lights, the Star Mazda Championship and the U.S. F2000 National Championship.
The IRL was founded in 1994 began racing in 1996. CART had sanctioned Indy car racing since 1979, when that organization broke away from USAC. The IRL which also owns the rights to the Indianapolis 500 race struggled in the early seasons with unknown drivers and teams. Eventually the schedule expanded, and caliber of drivers improved. The IRL began to draw teams from CART starting in 2000, contributing to the latter's bankruptcy and rebranding as Champ Car in 2003. For the 2008 season, Champ Car and the IRL merged under the IRL name.
The IRL's premier series was initially named the Indy Racing League. In 2003 after the completion of an agreement of the name Indy Car, the league was renamed to Indy Racing League IndyCar Series.. Izod was announced as the IndyCar Series title sponsor in 2010. In 2014, Verizon Communications became the title sponsor of the series through 2018. From 2019 onward the series has been sponsored by NTT.
The series initially raced on oval tracks, adding road–street course events and now has a split of ovals and road courses in the United States and Canada with the Indianapolis 500 as the showcase event.
