IROC XVIII - 1994

iROC

The International Race of Champions was an auto racing competition, featuring identically-prepared stock cars set up by a single team of mechanics, in an effort to make the race purely a test of driver ability. It was run with a small field of invited drivers (6-12) from all the major racing series including NASCAR, SCCA, FIA and USAC. Over the years CART and the IRL drivers, among others also participated.

IROC XVIII - 1994

A new Dodge Avenger sports coupe replaced the Dodge Daytonas used since 1990. Steve Kinser, the 13-time World of Outlaws sprint car champion, became the first representative of short-track racing to receive an IROC invitation. Dale Earnhardt was the first to drive an Avenger into victory lane, at Daytona. Mark Martin grabbed the IROC points lead with his win at Darlington. Kinser made history -- and nationwide headlines -- by leading the most laps and taking the checkered flag at Talladega. In the final race, at Michigan, Al Unser Jr. claimed a record eighth IROC first place, but Martin's battling second earned him the $200,000 IROC title and a new Avenger passenger car. Unser Jr., Rusty Wallace and Earnhardt tied for runner-up points, with Al getting the ranking under the tie-breaker system. (from IROC Website)
