IROC XVII - 1993

iROC

The International Race of Champions was an auto racing competition, featuring identically-prepared stock cars set up by a single team of mechanics, in an effort to make the race purely a test of driver ability. It was run with a small field of invited drivers (6-12) from all the major racing series including NASCAR, SCCA, FIA and USAC. Over the years CART and the IRL drivers, among others also participated.

IROC XVII - 1993

Drivers representing all three racing disciplines visited victory lane in the four-race series, the last for the Dodge Daytona cars used since 1990. Bill Elliott took the lead with six laps to go to win the opener at Daytona. In IROC's first visit to historic Darlington Raceway, Elliott's felow NASCAR Winston Cup competitor, Davey Allison, scored the victory. Combined with his second place at Daytona, Allison enjoyed a big points lead halfway through the campaign. Indy Car star Al Unser Jr. recorded his record seventh IROC triumph at Talladega to place himself in contention for the title. Dale Earnhardt replaced the late Alan Kulwicki for the last two events, and Terry Labonte sat in Allison's seat in the finale at Michigan following Allison's death. Road racer Geoff Brabham won at Michigan for the second consecutive year, while Labonte finished sixth to ensure Allison a posthumous IROC championship. Allison's $175,000 prize money was paid to a trust fund for his children. (from IROC Website)
