IROC XI - 1987

iROC

The International Race of Champions was an auto racing competition, featuring identically-prepared stock cars set up by a single team of mechanics, in an effort to make the race purely a test of driver ability. It was run with a small field of invited drivers (6-12) from all the major racing series including NASCAR, SCCA, FIA and USAC. Over the years CART and the IRL drivers, among others also participated.

IROC XI - 1987

IROC began its second 10 years with series "rookie" Geoff Bodine capturing Race 1 at Daytona, only the third driver ever to win his first IROC start. Bodine benefitted from a multi-car accident that eliminated Al Unser and Scott Pruett and slowed Mario Andretti and Wally Dallenbach Jr. In Race 2 at Mid-Ohio, Bobby Rahal played a waiting game, which paid off with a victory. Rahal avoided a three-car, first-turn accident and took the lead from pole-sitter Michael Andretti with nine laps to go. In Race 3 at Michigan, Al Unser Jr. scored his first major oval-track triumph, passing Darrell Waltrip in the final turn. "Little Al," with only five laps of practice, swapped the top spot with Waltrip throughtout the event. Bodine finished third, putting him on the pole for the final event at Watkins Glen, with Unser Jr. alongside. The NASCAR star got the jump at the green flag and led all the way to take the $191,900 title. (from IROC Website)
