Manitoba/Northern Ontario Jr B Champion - Keystone Cup
Manitoba/Northern Ontario Jr B Champion - Keystone Cup
The Keystone Cup is awarded to the Junior B ice hockey champions for Western Canada. The Keystone Cup was donated to the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association by Keystone Sports from Selkirk, Manitoba. From 1983 to 2017, the championship playdowns included the champions of hockey leagues from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Northwestern Ontario. In 2018, citing costs for travel and accommodations, British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan withdrew from competition for the Keystone Cup, making it a championship between Manitoba (Keystone Junior B League) and Northwestern Ontario (Lakehead Junior B Hockey League). In previous years, the winner of the Keystone Junior B League would have to had played the Northwest Junior Hockey League for the Baldy Northcott Trophy representing the Manitoba Provincial Junior B Hockey Champions. This ended with the folding of the Northwest Junior Hockey League in 2004. Although the Capital Region Junior Hockey League formed in Manitoba for the 2018/19 season no new playoff formats have been incorporated. Originally the William Ryan Trophy Championship was a playoff between Thunder Bay Junior B League and the North of Superior Junior B Hockey League, which folded in 2004. The Thunder Nay Hockey League was renamed to the Lakehead Junior Hockey League. Additional western Canada championships include the Cyclone Taylor Cup in British Columbia, the Russ Barnes Trophy in Alberta, the Athol Murray Trophy in Saskatchewan. the Keystone Junior Hockey League, and the William Ryan Trophy in Northwestern Ontario. |
