Canadian Junior Hockey 1991 - 92 Memorial Cup
For the third time in the history of the Memorial Cup the tournament was held outside of Canada as Seattle, Washington would play host to the four team round robin tournament. The 1983 and 1986 Memorial Cup Tournaments had been hosted by Portland, Oregon.
The Kamloops Blazers, who had finished in first place overall in the final WHL regular season standings, defeated the Saskatoon Blades to win the President's Cup and earn the right to represent the WHL at the Memorial Cup. The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds were making their second consecutive Memorial Cup appearance after they defeated the North Bay Centennials in seven games to win the J. Ross Robertson Cup and the Ontario Hockey League championship. The Verdun College Francais defeated the Trois-Rivieres Draveurs in seven games to capture the President's Cup and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League championship.
At the conclusion of the round robin tournament Sault Ste. Marie advanced to the final by posting a perfect 3-0 record while Verdun was eliminated after going winless in their three games. The host Seattle Thunderbirds met Kamloops in the semi final, Kamloops winning 8-3 to advance to the final game.
In the final game Kamloops jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but Sault Ste. Marie battled back to tie the game before Kamloops scored with fifteen seconds left in regulation time, to win 5-4. The Memorial Cup was originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was donated by the Ontario Hockey Association in March, 1919. Initially the Cup was awarded to the national junior hockey champions of Canada. Later on it came to signify Junior 'A' hockey supremacy when in 1934, junior hockey in Canada was divided into 'A' and 'B' classifications. In 1971, junior 'A' hockey was divided once again to form a major junior and a Tier 'II' level. The Memorial Cup was awarded to the higher category. In 1972, a round-robin tournament format replaced the old play-down system to determine the champions. Since then, the champions of the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), along with a host club, have met each spring in a round-robin series with the two top teams playing off in a sudden-death game to determine the Cup champions. |
