The 1981 Memorial Cup Final was held in Windsor, Ontario, hosted by the OHL. Following the 1980 tournament and the concern that the format allowed for a team that had won its first three games to determine its opponent in the final by performing in a certain way in its fourth game, new rules were introduced to prevent such a situation. If a team clinched a spot in the final by the fourth game of the double round robin tournament, the other two teams would play a two game total goal series to determine who would move on. If a team clinched a spot in the final by the fifth game of the tournament then the two other teams would then play a sudden semifinal game. The Royals defeated the Trois-Rivieres Draveurs in five games to win the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League title. The representatives of the Western Hockey League were the Victoria Cougars who won the WHL's President's Cup by defeating the Calgary Wranglers in seven games. The Kitchener Rangers were the Ontario Hockey League's representatives as they defeated the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds nine points to three in the eight point final to win the J. Ross Robertson Cup. Cornwall and Kitchener advanced out of the double round robin with the Royals finishing with a record of 3-1 while Kitchener endes up with a 2-2 record. Victoria lost three times and was eliminated. In the final Cornwall posted a 5-2 win to capture their third Memorial Cup title. The Memorial Cup was originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was donated by the Ontario Hockey Association in March, 1919. Initially the Cup was awarded to the national junior hockey champions of Canada. Later on it came to signify Junior 'A' hockey supremacy when in 1934, junior hockey in Canada was divided into 'A' and 'B' classifications. In 1971, junior 'A' hockey was divided once again to form a major junior and a Tier 'II' level. The Memorial Cup was awarded to the higher category. In 1972, a round-robin tournament format replaced the old play-down system to determine the champions. Since then, the champions of the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), along with a host club, have met each spring in a round-robin series with the two top teams playing off in a sudden-death game to determine the Cup champions.
