The Memorial Cup final series returned to Toronto in 1923 with the University of Manitoba Bisons taking on the Kitchener Colts in a two game total series that would be played on March 22 and 26. In the first game the University of Manitoba scored five goals in the second period as they defeated the Colts by a 7-3 score. Four days later the University of Manitoba won by the same 7-3 score and the Memorial Cup by a 14-6 score. The Regina Pats and Saskatoon juniors met in the Saskatchewan junior final. Saskatoon emerged victorious the teams played to a 2-2 tie on Feb. 27 , Saskatoon won 2-1 on March 1. However a protest files by Regina on player eligibility awarded Regina the series. Regina went on to meet the Calgary Canadians in the Western Canadian playoff series. On March 7, Regina, playing at home in Exhibition Stadium, won the first game 3-1 over Calgary. In Regina on March 9, Calgary came back to defeat the Pats 6-2 and win the total-goal series 7-5. in Winnipeg, the University of Manitoba qualified for the Abbott Cup final with an 8-1 victory over Brandon. Calgary traveled on to Winnipeg to meet the University of Manitoba losing 5-4 in the first game and 5-3 in the second game, the University of Manitoba winning the Abbott Cup 10-7. The University of Manitoba Bisons played the Fort William Cubs in the Western Conference final playing to a 3-3 tie on March 18. On March 19, Manitoba posted a 6-1 victory, winning the series 9-4. In Toronto, the University of Toronto and Kitchener Colts played to a 3-3 tie in the first game of a home-and-home battle for the OHA's junior title. Kitchener would win that series at home three nights later. In the Candaian Eastern semifinal the Kitchener edged Iroquois Falls 3-2 in a one-game playoff. Kitchener would go on to defeat Montreal A.A.A. 10-4 in a sudden-death game to advance to the Memorial Cup final. The Memorial Cup was originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was donated by the Ontario Hockey Association in March, 1919. Initially the Cup was awarded to the national junior hockey champions of Canada. Later on it came to signify Junior 'A' hockey supremacy when in 1934, junior hockey in Canada was divided into 'A' and 'B' classifications. In 1971, junior 'A' hockey was divided once again to form a major junior and a Tier 'II' level. The Memorial Cup was awarded to the higher category. In 1972, a round-robin tournament format replaced the old play-down system to determine the champions. Since then, the champions of the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), along with a host club, have met each spring in a round-robin series with the two top teams playing off in a sudden-death game to determine the Cup champions.
