Canadian Junior Hockey 1994 - 95 Memorial Cup
The Kamloops Blazers hosted the 1995 Memorial Cup and as the defending champions they would attempt to become the seventh team in Memorial Cup history to win back-to-back titles. The Hull Olympiques, the Detroit Junior Red Wings and the Brandon Wheat Kings would join the Blazers in the tournament.
As the host, Kamloops automatically qualified for the tournament but they earned their way into the Memorial Cup for the third time in four years by defeating the Wheat Kings in six games to capture their sixth President's Cup and Western Hockey League title since 1984.The Red Wings qualified for the Memorial Cup for the first time by defeating the Guelph Storm in six games to win the J. Ross Robertson Cup. The Hull Olympiques defeated the Laval Titan in five games to qualify for the Memorial Cup representing the QMJHL.
At the conclusion of the six game round robin tournament the Blazers had posted a perfect 3-0 record advancing to the final. Detroit and the Wheat Kings would play in the semifinal. Hull was eliminated from the tournament with three losses. In the semifinal game the Detroit Junior Red Wings defeated Brandon by a 2-1 score to advance to the final.
In the final Kamloops' power play was on fire as they scored five goals in eight opportunities as they defeated Detroit 8-2 to win the Memorial Cup, for the second consecutive year and for the third time in four years. The Memorial Cup was originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was donated by the Ontario Hockey Association in March, 1919. Initially the Cup was awarded to the national junior hockey champions of Canada. Later on it came to signify Junior 'A' hockey supremacy when in 1934, junior hockey in Canada was divided into 'A' and 'B' classifications. In 1971, junior 'A' hockey was divided once again to form a major junior and a Tier 'II' level. The Memorial Cup was awarded to the higher category. In 1972, a round-robin tournament format replaced the old play-down system to determine the champions. Since then, the champions of the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), along with a host club, have met each spring in a round-robin series with the two top teams playing off in a sudden-death game to determine the Cup champions. |
