The Division I Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) determines
its champion in a 16-team, single-elimination tournament. The champions of
eight conferences receive automatic bids to this tournament. However, teams
from other conferences are still eligible for one of the eight remaining "at-large"
spots.
